Happy Birthday, America!

Today is the 4th of July and I was discussing with Carter what that meant.
Carter (5½ yrs): What kind of holiday is this?

Me: It's the day we celebrate America's independence.

Carter: What does 'independence' mean?

Me: It means we celebrate our freedom. Freedom to go to church where we want, be friends with who we want, talk about what we want, do what we want.

Carter: Whatever we want to do?

Me: Yes, as long as we don't break any laws.

A little while later I overheard this conversation:
Carter: Today is AWESOME!

Bry: Why's that?

Carter: Because I get to do whatever I want to all day long and no one can tell me not to!

Bry: Today is America's Independence Day. Yours starts when you're 18.
